Do Ghosts Cause EMF Fields, Hallucinations & Base Readings

Welcome. If you're new here, be sure to subscribe to Ghost Hunting Secrets for free ghost hunting tips, videos, haunted locations, and other goodies. Thanks for visiting!

Bob asks an interesting question about electromagnetic fields, ghosts, hallucinations, and base readings.  He writes:

TAPS says that ghosts cause EMF fields and need energy to manifest.  Well, they also say that EMF fields cause hallucinations, so my question is what type of evidence is available to prove that a ghost causes or even raises an EMF field?  Are there base line readings done beforehand?  I have had many promising results with magnetic fields, but I am in need of some supporting evidence.  If you or any of your members know of any supporting facts, can you let me know?

Thanks,

Bob

Base Readings and EMF Meters

Hi Bob.  Yes, a base reading should always be taken before using an EMF meter to record anomalies.  The base reading will tell you what the background EMF is at your location.  I recommend using a tri-field (3 way) EMF meter.  True 3-axis sensors ensure that your measurements remain accurate regardless of the direction of the meter.

Ghosts and Electromagnetic Fields

ghosts electromagnetic fields emf You asked, "What evidence is available to prove that a ghost causes or even raises an EMF field?"  It has been proven that when a ghost is sighted there is normally a high EMF reading (significant from base/background readings).  Whether the EMF is *caused* by the ghost—or whether something else causes the EMF is a subject of debate.

Strong EMF's that move (through walls, through different stories of a building) are certainly NOT normal.  These are unlikely to be caused by man-made power lines, or electrical equipment—which are stationary EMF's.  In my opinion, strong moving electromagnetic fields can be a good indication of paranormal activity.  I have found that moving EMF's will either move away from me, or follow me. In one case, I was able to follow a moving EMF through three floors of a building before it disappeared!

Effects of Electromagnetic Fields

emf power lines.jpg As far as hallucinations go, the scientific community remains unclear on the precise effects of EMF exposure and what levels of exposure might be unsafe.  Almost every health organization has set certain limits on EMF exposure.  Power companies are subject to these limits.

Prolonged exposure to strong electromagnetic fields is thought to cause headaches, fatigue, dizziness, skin rashes, weakness, increased anxiety, decreased mental function, impaired vision, emotional imbalances, reduced melatonin levels, and magnification of the "fight or flight" reponse.  At extremely high levels, electromagnetic fields can cause flickering of vision and disorientation.  Of course, this applies to prolonged exposure to extremely high-level electromagnetic fields.  Practically speaking, most electromagnetic fields (in the presence of ghosts) are not prolonged or extremely high-level.  So, I don't think you need to worry about hallucinations.

Great question.

I have a quick question and I'm not sure if I should post it here. Anyway, I was wondering if what I do could attract spirits? I live in a new home and have been researching my parent's family trees extensively. Since that time I almost always have a stange feeling of being watched in the downstairs room where the computer is located. I have also heard a weak voice one afternoon and most recently saw someone reflected in a window standing behind me. Could these spirits have been attracted by my research and talking about the family history? Could these spirits be my parent's realatives?

January 7, 2008

Michelle @ 12:04 am

Hi Gruppie Girl.  Yes, it's possible that your activity could have attracted deceased relatives.  By researching your family tree, you are honoring the memory of past relatives and they may be able to feel that.  Sometimes deceased relatives like to watch-over family members that are currently living.  Other times, relatives who have not fully crossed-over will linger for a variety of reasons.

I was wondering with an EMF reading, besides a sprite what would cause the EMF meter to go off the scale? We came to New Orleans, LA for a convention and one night while putting away my cameras after sight seeing, I accidentally hit the "on" button to my EMF meter and it went crazy. I went through the hotel room we were in, and even sat it on the bed and it was still going crazy. My friend with me was sleeping, I took photos, but also wanted to know what would cause it to go crazy like that. I even pulled out the second EMF meter that only has lights, no meter reading, and it stayed on red. While moving around the room, sometimes it would go down to about a three, then go back off the scale, anything passed five is off the scale on mine. It stopped at one point and then started up again going crazy, I made sure the TV was off, and could not figure out if anything else would have caused it to go crazy like that. We stay at the Hampton Inn and Suites. Do you know of anything that could have caused both EMF reading to go crazy like that? Cindyrsd

February 12, 2008

Cindyrsd @ 2:05 am

Add on to my question that I forgot to put in. My EMF meter is "The Ghost Meter," which has a meter scale from 0 to 5 Milli Gauss.  When I said it went off the scale, where five is the last number in red, there a blank area where the meter went to passed the five red area. On the second meter it's a E.L.F. Zone by, enzone it has lights, green meaning safe, yellow meaning caution, and red meaning danger. Now the green range is 0 to 2.5 Milli Gauss, the yellow range is 2.5 to 7 Milli Gauss, and the red range is 8 Milli Gauss or higher. Now since both was going off the chart, it was giving an 8 or higher Milli Gauss. As I walked around the hotel room I made sure the tv was off, I thought that might cause it, but it didn't the part that got me was when I lad it on the bed and I was still getting off the scale reading, as I walked around the room, it did drop some but picked back up and got strong again, when I took it into the bath room it dropped down to caution Yellow area then as I walked it got strong again back passed the red zone. I took photos, turned on my tape recorder, but I would like someone to tell me what else could have caused the EMF reader to do that. Can anyone help. Thanks Cindyrsd

Michelle @ 9:52 pm

Hi Cindy. Since I wasn't at the hotel with you, it's difficult to say what caused the EMF meter to respond so strongly. Electromagnetic fields at haunted locations tend to be erratic and fluctuate in strength rather than remain constant like man-made EMFs. Several people who have used "The Ghost Meter" report that it picks up cell phone tower communications, and responds to cell phones in the nearby area. If there was a cell phone tower nearby (or perhaps a hotel guest who was talking on a cell phone), either of these could have triggered a high reading. On the other hand, it could have been paranormal activity. It's hard to make a determination since I wasn't there.

Every EMF meter has its own strengths and weaknesses. For example, the Trifield Natural EMF Meter is designed to block out man-made EMF fields so it ignores energy that cycles at 50-60Hz. This is good, since it usually avoids picking up signals from man-made electrical appliances. However, the drawback is that the Trifield Natural EMF Meter has been known to detect thunderstorms several miles away (it was designed to detect geometric storms), and it can be overly sensitive to human electromagnetic fields. (There is a sensitivity reading that can be adjusted, though.) It's also possible that your EMF meter could have picked up a signal from your camera – if you held the camera close to the meter.

February 13, 2008

Lycanthrope @ 5:40 pm

Another possibility could be wiring. There are quite a few different scenarios that involve old wiring that would cause a high EMF reading. Maybe you could have tried to confirm or eliminate the possibility that the EMF was originating from a wall or floor or even possibly the ceiling. If the EMF was moving, it's not likely to be wiring.

February 14, 2008

Cindyrsd @ 12:04 am

Thanks Michelle and Lycanthrope for your answers; All I can say is I don't think it was a cell phone, we had our cell phone with us and didn't have a problem with any reading, But It was moving at times, it went from a 2 to passed a five, but when I got to the bath room, it went back to normal, went back to the main room and it went what I call crazy. I went toward the hotel door of our room that led into the hallway, as I got toward the door to our room the meter started going back to between .5 and 1 then I went into the hallway and walked down the hall, it stayed in a normal range.

I went back into our room and and began to pick it up again, the closer I got to our bed, it went passed five, I pointed it up toward the ceiling and still got a reading, but not high, the meter did move but when ever I got toward the bed it went crazy it went passed the five meter range, I even put a pillow on top of it on the bed and still got a high reading, the high reading was at our bed, at the sofa area got about a four, at the desk area got between three and four. I was asking because I've never had it to act like that. My daughter see orbs but she was not with us, I didn't know if the unit got damaged or what. when we got home, I used it around the house and got my org base reading, so that told me my unit was not broke or damaged, my daughter saw an orb in her bed room, and I got out the meter and it worked just fine.

We followed it, until about two mins had passed and the orb was gone. Oh I asked the Hampton Inn was the hotel damaged in the hurricane in 2005, she said yes there was damage but the hotel use to be an old warehouse, she stated she didn't know what kind of warehouse or how old the building was. I took photos while this was happening and video with infrared mode on, haven seen the video yet but the photos have only did a quick look at them, on one there's a misty in the photo but haven't really examined it yet.

If you have any other ideas as to what might have happen please post it and again I thank you for your answers. Cindy

issi @ 12:34 pm

Hi.  I have had many strange occurances in my life time.  It wasn't until recently when a friend of mine suggested we go to an old haunted house tour did I really start getting curious of all the energies around us.  Now that I have proved to myself they are here and most of them are going to stay … I decided to buy some equipment.  One of the peices for a starter is The Ghost Meter.  I did a medium reading throughout the house and realized whenever I touched anything metal the meter would go passed the five.  I have had problems with compasses and watches in the past … could I by some weird and strange way be setting off the meter?  The meter doesn't sound off if I set it in between my hands but it does read anywhere from the .25 to the 1.50.  However, if I touch metal any kind of pure metal the meter hits 4.50 or higher.  I walked around and realized it is still measuring the EMF around me at the same amount.  However if I pick up a piece of metal such as a pair of pliars with rubber coated handles it doesn't go passed the .30 mark.

Could I have a high EMF reading off of my person?

April 3, 2008

Michelle @ 6:54 am

Hi Issi. It's certainly possible—although I would FIRST look at nearby objects (cell phones, digital cameras, electrical fuse boxes, power lines, weather anomalies) that could be setting off the meter, before assuming that your biological EMF is the cause.  There are people who are "magnetic" and cause electrical devices to slow down/malfunction/stop working.  For example, I have a friend who cannot wear battery-operated watches because they mysteriously stop working.  More than likely, however, it's something in your environment.

Greg @ 9:17 am

Hey, I'm a superintendent in New York City.  I'm not one to get freaked out about just anything, but last year, while walking out of the electric room in my basement, I saw some one walk out of the boiler room and into the hallway just in front of me.  He was wearing my uniform (Navy blue top and pants).  I called out to him thinking he was my porter…but my porter answered behind me, as he was walking in from outside.  I ran ahead to see who had walked out of the boiler room because it's a restricted area, but I found no one.  We have cameras in the basement, so I checked them to see if the person was caught on camera, but there was only me looking around in the video.

Now, I'm a pretty rational guy and I don't scare easily, but I was shi$@ing bricks at that point.  My question is, being that I left the electric room, and from where I saw the apparition there are electric risers feeding the apartments above, is it possible that my brain was some how affected by the EMF's in this area and caused me to have a hallucination?  Now, by itself, that may be a pretty good theory, but I failed to mention that a contractor has repeatedly told me that he saw me downstairs a number of times and called out to me and that I just disappeared.  He kept asking me, "Why do you keep running away from me when I go downstairs?"  He told me this about a week after I saw the apparition.  I had no idea what he was talking about until it hit me later on the following week.  He must have seen the same thing I saw.  It's been about a year since that happened, but I'm still curious as to what caused it.  Anyone out there have any comments or suggestions?

September 18, 2008

Michelle @ 4:02 am

Hi Greg.  You could have some residual paranormal activity in the building which might explain the uniformed figure.  I doubt you're hallucinating since another person (the contractor) saw the same evidence.  If the activity continues, you might want to investigate it further.  Researching the history of the building could prove interesting.

You say "It has been proven that when a ghost is sighted there is normally a high EMF reading (significant from base/background readings)."

I've often heard this stated but never come across any supporting evidence, despite extensive searching.  Can you please tell me where I can find this evidence, please?

Michelle @ 10:47 am

R Whitt — You can see this firsthand.  Buy a EMF meter, and take some base readings.  Travel to an area where you can witness an apparition (ghost).  Take an EMF reading during the activity, and compare this to the base readings.  You can measure the difference between the readings, and may see a change/spike.  If you're looking for published evidence on EMF & paranormal activity, I'd recommend exploring electromagnetism, physics, or parapsychology journals.  No doubt you'll find some studies there.

I have a EMF and have never seen a spike for a ghost but I will tell you that they are 100% real.  Trust me, I know this.  Go to youtube.com and do a search on Ghost Box.  It works.  I talk to them every other day, and before you say it's bull crap, get a ghost box try it yourself then you will know they are 100% real.  Have a nice day.

Just wondering what it would mean. I went on a paranormal investigation at an old asylum. I had no electrical devices on me, no mobile, no cameras i was standing in the middle of the room. So far I know of, the ringing is a natural thing, but when I get that sound going through my ears, I look around and, well if some people have a certain ability, you can't see shadow figure with naked eyes, but some can. It's just your body warning you, because I have a huge ability to see spirits, reason I hear ringing, so I'm kind of used to it, but it's not a bad thing Stephanie, it might be something else. Hope the ringing stops soon for you, it's nothing to be worried about.

Christopher Knowles,
I know what you are trying to say, It's all very frustrating is it not? many people would say get a blessing, or as a great friend of mine told me and helped me with is a prayer "Our father in heaven, hollowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from the evil one". try the prayer, if it does not work, try a blessing, it all can help, if not, ask someone at a church. Hope you can get some help.

Cheers,
Courtney.

courtney @ 12:48 pm

Steph,
Well within when you and your friends went to the asylum, there might of been some spirits around, including when they moved the EMF over you and it going crazy, then there might of been something around you, hope this helps.

Cheers,
Courtney.

Courtney @ 2:33 pm

Levi,

I saw your post and I was surprised, from what I had seen on my very first ghost investigation is that when the EMF picks that up, that it may mean there is something there, but no one really knows, try to get a digital camera and take pictures, look through them (you cant see orbs with the naked eye but cameras can pick that up) and if you see any then get them printed out or saved and I could tell you what you can do, but I can only say that if there is something in there you need to get a blessing, most people dont and usually leave their home, but within me having a very rare gift as to be able to see, hear, feel, and sense spirits I have grown very used to spirits, now many people are not, I do not know thuroughly if you have had any activity going on but if it hasnt hurt you or done anything around the house, then there may not be anything there, maybe your house has a high reading, but if you need any help just email me TimeForMiracles945@yahoo.com and I will help out some more.

Cheers,
Courtney.

I read Christopher Brown's initial post and more than recognized what is happening to him.

First of all, what he is hearing are NOT ghosts, the "persons" he is hearing are very much alive and associated with intracerebral interrogation and mind-control technologies.

Christopher, please go to mindjustice.org and read the postings of the other hundreds of us reporting identical so-called phenomena. The other targets would answer the majority of your concerns about what is happening to you. We wish we could stop it all, but stopping it is way above our non-existent "Security Clearances". The most we can do is help you through it — and oh –that is NOT God you are hearing from…They've pulled that one on all of us. Belive the voice saying THAT and you could find yourself in one heck of a situation when God starts asking you to do things you might ordinarily not contemplate,

Thank you, ghost hunters for keeping Christopher's posts. We hope to be able to answer some of his questions.

My best to you and your team and yours who seek the truth in some of the more out-of-the way spaces using logic and science to confirm or not, what you investigate.

I was wondering if a spirit that has energy and comes close enough if it can cause a reaction of some sort? Let me rewind a bit I went to my mothers house yesterday to return a movie that I had borrowed and when I knelt down the hairs on the back of my hand stood up and then I had a dull pain in the back of my hand, the pain then traveled up my arm and down my left side of my chest and then back up and sort of got suck in my left elbow area. All of this took place over a couple of hours and then finally just went away. My Mom has many strange experiences in her house and believes there is a doorway or vortex in her home and in the area I knelt down. She also believes this because of the spirits are always different. I am sort of scared to back into her home any ideas?

Hi guys. I had an experience on saturday night that I cannot explain, I was sat up around 2am and saw something move rapidly to my right. I would like to say a black figure but couldn't really be sure. What I am sure of is that I definitely saw something large move. The room subsequently became very cold ( I never feel cold) so much so that my arms and legs were covered in goose pimples.

I have an EMF App on my phone which probably isn't that accurate but definitely did the trickon this occasion. Average readings around the room were plus 40 – 50 , however when I pointed it in the direction I saw something it was around plus 42 the dropped rapidly to – 393.

I cleared it, moved it away and pointed it back again a plus reading of -393????

I repeated this several times and it just kept doing the same. Eventualy I stood up and went over to the area I had seen the movement to check the reading and just got a normal plus 40. The room temp changed to normal and since the all readings have been around plus 40 with not on negative reading.

I cannot find any common reason why the would have happened and just wondering if anyone could tell me why this may have happened apart from a supernatural encounter.

Cheers J

also my son stares off into walls for long periods of time sometimes talks to them from time to time. my one year old feels when something is wrong cause everytime i start feeling funny he comes right to me or screams until i pick him up. he doesnt want no body but me at those times. my dog is very protective of me when im feeling those weird feelings also. i dont know what to do. could someone please guide me to the right people.

This only happened last night, so it is very fresh. Last night I heard my 25 year old son let out a blood curling scream (something I have never heard before). I raced to him and he was frightened as can be. Physically his face was white, his eyes unusually wide open and very red. His body was very hot and clammy, yet he said he was freezing. His hands were particularly cold as ice. He began to tell me what happened. He felt like a surge of electricity go thru his body causing it extreme pain, when he opened his eyes he saw someone standing beside the bed. Just at that time, the whole room lit up with white light. it then went away and so did the person. He was left with very tingling arms and legs.

I was frightened that he had a heart attack. I was thinking to take him to the hospital. He assured me that his heart was just racing (he is a personal trainer so knows a bit about the human body). This experience made him sleep up in my room. What alarms me is that he described it like he felt a huge amount of electricity run through his body and the fact that he saw a person, plus the huge white light. it definitely wasn't a nice experience, something that almost seems like it was a bad spirit or death. I will see how his body feels today. if he has any problems I will take him to the doctor, but how to explain it to them…they will think we are crazy.

I believe I have a female spirit in my house. She doesn't like to be around me and usually tends to stay in a different part of the house than I am in. But the tension really makes being home uncomfortable. I've told her to leave, and told her I "free" her. She left for 3 days, but is back now. Is there anything else I can do to get her out of my home?

I can't believe this! My sister was showing me orbs that she photographed on her digital camera. I zoomed in on one of these orbs, to show her that it's most likely nothing. To my shock, one of these close ups on the orb, showed her dog that died 5 years ago in the screen door looking in. There was a mist surrounding the dog, and it is definitely the dog that died (Rottweiler/Shepperd mix). She told me that at 10:30 P.M. one night, when it was pouring rain outside, the doorbell rang but no one was there. I can't see kids doing this late at night in the pouring rain during the week. This was before I discovered by accident the image of her dog.

Is it possible for the spirit of a dog to cause a doorbell to ring? Also I sent the picture to my friends who are logical and don't get fooled easily, and all can see the image! It wasn't a reflection, because she was standing up on a staircase taking a picture of me and my 10 year old nephew. There was nothing in the hallway in front of the screen door except shoes, and I was standing in front of the door. Please answer my question of the doorbell going off. For me now, any logical explanations or science saying that it's a reflection, is "out the window" for me. I know what I see. Thanks!

my ex boyfriend died Dec. 15th 2011. we have not been together since then. Up to his death, he blames me for him giving up his fight with liver disease. Now I think he is haunting me.

Last night in my bedroom my room went from real hot to like a refrigerator. And i would of sworn I saw a shadow, but it was not clear. so what do I do from here? I tried to tell him it was time to cross over but nothing…

I have been doing some seances in my home with some friends…I downloaded an EMF/EVP Sensor on my Android and my readings went from 400mG to 1200mG. What does this mean?? I do not understand what the numbers mean.
